Manchester United forward Cristiano Ronaldo will not be happy with a substitute role at Old Trafford this season, says journalist Dean Jones.
The 37-year-old has started on the bench in United’s last few league fixtures, with manager Erik ten Hag opting to use Marcus Rashford up front instead.
How are things currently going for Ronaldo?
While Ronaldo did start in the Red Devils’ last match, a 2-0 win against FC Sheriff in the Europa League, and was able to score, it has not been a brilliant campaign for him so far.
In the Premier League, he has failed to register, with Ten Hag naming him in his first XI just once – the humiliating 4-0 defeat away at Brentford in August.
Instead, the Dutchman has gone for Rashford, who has not disappointed at Old Trafford this term.
In six league outings, the 24-year-old has scored three times, which justifies Ten Hag’s decision to pick him over Ronaldo.
What has Jones said about Ronaldo and United?
Jones says Ronaldo will not be pleased with this bit-part role he has been given but is not expecting the Portugal international to kick up a fuss.
Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, the journalist said: “Ronaldo won’t be happy, obviously, with a sub role for the duration of a season, but I’m sure we’ll just see him knuckle down and working hard and be professional right now.”
Will Ronaldo leave United at the end of the season?
Following United’s failure to qualify for the Champions League, reports during the summer transfer window claimed that Ronaldo wanted to leave Old Trafford.
Looking at how Ten Hag’s men have been playing of late, recently picking up a 3-1 win against Arsenal, they have a good chance of returning to the competition next year. That, however, may no longer be enough to keep Ronaldo at the Premier League outfit.
As Jones mentioned, the £18m-rated star is not going to be happy with being a substitute, something he has become under his new manager.
Ronaldo will also be out of contract next summer, though there is an option for a further year.
When you consider all of the above, everything is pointing towards the former Juventus and Real Madrid man ending his second spell as a United player soon. In regards to possible destinations, it will be interesting to see who exactly registers an interest after the likes of Chelsea and Bayern Munich reportedly snubbed him in the last transfer window.
