Arsenal enter agent talks to sign Man Utd target Victor Osimhen, but ‘tough’ factor threatens deal

Arsenal have reportedly begun talks with an agent over the capture of star striker Victor Osimhen, as they aim to beat Manchester United to his services.

The Gunners are on the hunt for a new player to spearhead their attack as centre-forwards Alexandre Lacazette and Eddie Nketiah are likely to leave. Arsenal improved several positions last summer, so most of their transfer funds this time around could be spent on a new goalscorer, such as Osimhen.

United, meanwhile, have club legend Cristiano Ronaldo in their ranks. And Erik ten Hag insists the Portuguese forward is part of his plans for next season.

Nevertheless, the Red Devils will need to find his successor at some point. Ronaldo is now 37 years old and cannot be relied on forever.

Both Arsenal and United are monitoring Osimhen’s situation ahead of the summer transfer window.

The Nigeria international will cost big money after a top campaign with Napoli in Serie A. He hit 18 goals in all competitions, helping them reach third in the league and the knockout round play-offs of the Europa League.

But this shouldn’t put Arsenal or United off Osimhen as they know striker is one of the most important positions on the pitch.

Goal provide an update on the 23-year-old’s future. They claim his agent has already flown to London to meet with Arsenal technical director Edu.

Victor Osimhen agent holds talks with Edu

This meeting occurred last week and the pair discussed a possible summer move to the Emirates for Osimhen.

However, Arsenal will have to overcome several obstacles to get the deal over the line.

Firstly, Napoli have made it into the Champions League for next season. Arsenal could only manage Europa League qualification, in contrast.

This means it will be slightly tougher to convince Osimhen on joining. He could view the move as a potential step down with regards to his career.

In addition, the report calls Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis an ‘extremely tough negotiator’. He won’t back down when it comes to Osimhen’s large price tag.

Napoli are asking for well above £68million, as this is what they paid Lille for Osimhen in September 2020.

Due to Laurentiis’ personality, Arsenal will have to bow down to this value or search elsewhere for a new hitman.

Should the Osimhen pursuit come to nothing as a result of Napoli’s demands, then Gabriel Jesus may be a clever alternative.

His Manchester City contract expires in 2023. That means this summer is City’s best time to sell, so they can pick up a decent fee.

But Arsenal will still have to pay far less for the Brazilian than Osimhen. And Jesus has bags of Premier League experience, which cannot be said for his attacking counterpart.

Meanwhile, Mikel Arteta has spoken about William Saliba after the defender’s great campaign on loan at Marseille.
