Anthony Martial remains one of a number of Manchester United squad members in contention to leave the club this January, but the Red Devils have had some trouble finding an appropriate suitor for the French forward.

A solution might be on the way, though, with reports suggesting a swap deal with Barcelona could allow the Premier League club to offload one of their higher earners for good.

United have reportedly knocked back an initial offer from Sevilla, who were said to be prepared to cover half of Martial’s wages for the duration of a loan switch.

Barcelona are thought to remain in the mix, though, despite completing a deal of their own for Spain forward Ferran Torres, and an exchange deal could help the Catalan side add to their ranks despite financial difficulties.

Torres’ move to Barcelona could eventually cost the club as much as £54m, meaning their pursuit of further attacking reinforcements could require them to part ways with current players.

Former United forward Memphis Depay is among those linked with an exit, despite only joining over the summer, while French international Ousmane Dembele is also among those who could be on the move.

And United’s previous interest in Dembele – a £97m signing from Borussia Dortmund in 2017 – could pave the way for a January exchange to see two France internationals move in opposite directions.

According to Catalan outlet Ara, a Martial-Dembele swap deal is one of the options being explored by Xavi’s side as they try to balance a delicate financial situation with the need for reinforcements.

The publication notes that Barca need to trim their wage bill before registering Torres, and Dembele is currently in the final few months of the deal he signed upon moving over from Germany.

If the 24-year-old is unable to agree a new contract, a January move may be a way for Barcelona to solve their wage situation while also receiving a return on their investment rather than losing him for free.

Barcelona boss Xavi remains hopeful Dembele will agree to a new Barcelona deal on reduced terms, but nothing has been agreed and the player is free to explore the possibility of a summer move on a free transfer.

The former Rennes man has played just a handful of club games this season after sustaining an injury on international duty at Euro 2020, most recently featuring in the draw with Sevilla on December 21.

Martial hasn’t been much more active for United, despite being fit and healthy for most of the season, and is said to be keen to play regular football in order to keep himself in contention for France’s squad for the World Cup later this year.

He is one of two United forwards to be linked with a January move to Camp Nou, though the other – Edinson Cavani – has given Ralf Rangnick food for thought with his recent performances.
