Bruno Fernandes has named the 2008 triumph in Moscow as his favourite memory of Manchester United in the Champions League, despite it coming 11 years before he joined the club.

The Portuguese star has played in the Champions League for Manchester United himself, impressing despite the club’s early exit from the competition last season.

The Red Devils may have fallen at the group stage in the last campaign, but Fernandes managed to score four goals in six games for the club.

However, with the disappointing ousting before the knockout stages, it is no great surprise that his favourite Manchester United memory in the Champions League came before his arrival in January 2019.

The 27-year-old has recalled the drama of 2008, when Cristiano Ronaldo opened the scoring and John Terry famously slipped at the climax of the penalty shootout after a 1-1 draw.

Asked for the best memory of Man Utd in the Champions League, Fernandes said: ‘I think Moscow, a great header from Cristiano. Then he missed the penalty and everyone said “United is going to lose”.

‘At the last moment John Terry slid and hit the post and the club wins the Champions League.’

Born in September 1994, it is not too surprising that Fernandes didn’t pick the classic win in the 1999 Champions League final, given that he hadn’t quite turned five-years-old at that point.

Fernandes is now looking to create some more positive memories of his own in the competition after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side lost their opening game in the Champions League this season at Young Boys in Switzerland.

The Red Devils host Villarreal on Wednesday night and, after three defeats in their last four games, are in need of three points and a boost in morale.
