Carlo Ancelotti has okayed the signing of Edinson Cavani, who has emerged as a target for Real Madrid, according to reports.

The Manchester United forward has spent the last two seasons at Old Trafford but will leave this summer once his contract expires. He penned an extension on his original one-year deal but is now expected to seek pastures new with the Bernabeu seemingly an option.

Cavani has been a squad player in Manchester, rarely starting games despite coming up with big goals and regularly contributing. At 35 the Uruguayan is edging towards the end of his career and Los Blancos believe he would accept a role as Karim Benzema’s back-up, reports Fichajes.

The former PSG man has excelled in Italy and France previously but is yet to ply his trade in Spain. Madrid are seen as Kylian Mbappe’s preferred destination this summer with the Frenchman due to leave Paris on a free if he doesn’t extend his contract. Erling Haaland is another man who is likely to move this summer.

Borussia Dortmund are set to face several potential suitors, who have long been alerted by Haaland’s release clause. Cavani is being seen by Madrid as an alternative to the Norwegian, should he opt for one of their rivals. The Spanish side are now preparing an offer which could attract the United man.

Cavani hasn’t played for the Red Devils for over a month and has only scored twice this term. Last season he netted 17 times. United themselves need to decide on a direction when it comes to their forward line with their options somewhat unclear.

Cristiano Ronaldo, at 37, is not a long-term solution and the incoming Erik ten Hag is said to have green lighted his departure. Marcus Rashford is out of form with rumours circulated that he too could move on whilst Anthony Martial’s loan switch to Sevilla hasn’t seen him recapture his best form.

Ralf Rangnick battled to keep Cavani in January when an exit was touted with Barcelona among those reportedly keen. He said at the time: “We had quite a few conversations in the last couple of weeks, probably the player with whom I have spoken most. I told him from the very first day that, for me, he is a highly important player.

“And, as I said, his professionalism, his work ethic is just amazing and I told him that I desperately want him to stay until the end of the season. He knows that. He also knows how highly I rate him and how highly I respect him. We spoke and he knows that I will definitely not let him go.”
