Paul Merson cannot believe Chelsea haven’t pulled the trigger on a Cristiano Ronaldo transfer, and explained why the 37-year-old would score far more for the Blues than Man Utd.
The Portuguese icon has made Manchester United aware of his desire to pursue his Champions League ambitions. Ronaldo wants out of Old Trafford and to find a home that can offer UCL football.
A wide variety of suitors have been credited with interest, though all have fallen by the wayside.
Indeed, Bayern Munich, Atletico Madrid and Chelsea have all drawn links. A move to any of the three has not been seriously explored. Agent Jorge Mendes reportedly tried to engineer moves to Inter and AC Milan, but to no avail.
Chelsea are known to be on the hunt for a new centre-forward this summer. Both Romelu Lukaku and Timo Werner have left upon returning to former clubs Inter Milan and RB Leipzig respectively.
That’s left just Kai Havertz holding down the fort as a false nine. Armando Broja is also on the books, though he too could leave Stamford Bridge before the September 1 deadline.
Thomas Tuchel reportedly seeks a reunion with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. The Gabon superstar played the best football of his career while working under Tuchel at Dortmund between 2015-17.
The latest on that pursuit can be found here, including why Chelsea have been shocked by Barcelona.
Regardless, writing in his column for Sky Sports, pundit Paul Merson revealed his disbelief at Chelsea not moving for Ronaldo.
Ronaldo ticks every box Chelsea are lacking – Merson
“Chelsea were outstanding against Tottenham on Sunday,” said Merson. “They dominated the match from start to finish, but they haven’t got a goalscorer or centre-forward and that cost them three points.
“Despite their domination, Spurs goalkeeper Hugo Lloris made just one save. That tells you all you need to know.
“I cannot believe they didn’t or haven’t gone in for Cristiano Ronaldo. He just ticks all of the boxes Chelsea are lacking.
“Playing for Chelsea is not like playing for Manchester United, who are working from the halfway line. Chelsea are on the edge of the box, dominating games.
“Chelsea have unbelievable wing-backs, they dominate football matches, if they were putting the ball into the box for Ronaldo I would dread to think how many goals he could score.”
Why aren’t Chelsea interested?
Ronaldo to Chelsea may have its merits, though Blues boss Thomas Tuchel reportedly isn’t keen.
Explaining why, Fabrizio Romano stated in mid-July: “Tuchel doesn’t want to sign Ronaldo. The only one that could change the situation [for Chelsea] is Tuchel himself.
“Todd Boehly was open to discussions [about signing Ronaldo] but as of today, Tuchel says no, he’s not interested.
“He thinks the Romelu Lukaku deal was a problem for Chelsea from a tactical point of view. He’s got the feeling it could be the same with Ronaldo.
“He wants players that are perfect for his tactical ideas and approach. This is why negotiations between Ronaldo and Chelsea at the moment are completely off.”
