Donny van de Beek has finally been unshackled from his Manchester United limbo.
While the arrival of the Ajax protege in 2020 admittedly felt like overkill given the presence of Bruno Fernandes and Paul Pogba, nobody could have anticipated just how little game time he would be given.
Say what you like about whether or not Van de Beek is overrated, but the simple fact of the matter is that affording just four Premier League starts to a £40-million signing in 18 months is truly mystifying.
The Van de Beek conundrum
Only those in and around Carrington will know exactly why Van de Beek was stapled to the bench so often at Old Trafford, but there’s no escaping the fact that it’s left everyone scratching their heads.
Besides, even the potentially game-changing arrival of Ralf Rangnick didn’t save the day for Van de Beek with the exact sort of exile that he experienced under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer only negligibly easing.
Perhaps there’s good reason for that and maybe one day we’ll discover why, but we can only work off what we see on the pitch and that has merely served to make Van de Beek’s predicament all the more bizarre.
Van de Beek’s quality on the pitch
Although Van de Beek was never world-beating when he took to the pitch for United, he added an inordinately high amount of quality, ambition and dynamism for how starved of minutes he was nevertheless.
As such, there were hardly many fans who batted an eyelid when Van de Beek marked the first Premier League start of his loan move to Everton by producing a stellar performance against Leeds United.
All in all, it really is a head scratcher and one that’s tinged with additional sadness when you look at it through the lens of a recent video uploaded by YouTuber ‘The 12th Man’.
Van de Beek ‘always being ignored’ at Man Utd
Posted on the back of Van de Beek’s move to Goodison Park, the compilation’s title of: “Van de Beek is always being IGNORED by his teammates,” does exactly what it says on the tin.
Documenting some damning examples of Van de Beek seemingly being snubbed by his United teammates, you can’t help watching the montage and feeling as though he was wasted at Old Trafford.
Complete with soundbites, cheeky captions and even black and white transitions, it really does make sure that you can’t miss Van de Beek being ignored, so be sure to check it out down below:
Ouch. It’s painful and sad in equal measure.
What on earth was happening?
Now, look, we’re sure that some of the instances in the video are completely innocent decision-making quirks, but you can’t help watching certain clips and wondering why on earth they snubbed Van de Beek.
Again, perhaps the players knew something, like the managers, that hasn’t been made apparent to the fans, but Van de Beek has already made a strong start to proving everybody wrong at Everton.
Besides, no matter what comes of Van de Beek’s employment with United, it’s just going to be nice to see such a talented midfielder finally getting their chance to play consistently in the Premier League.
Only time will tell whether Solskjaer and Rangnick’s thought processes are going to become more apparent or if the Van de Beek situation will continue to baffle, but it’s going to be fascinating to watch either way.
