Dharmesh Sheth drops transfer update at Old Trafford

Manchester United “100 per cent” want to sign a goalkeeper before the end of the transfer window, according to Sky Sports reporter Dharmesh Sheth.

Erik ten Hag currently has two senior shotstoppers at his disposal, but Sheth reckons the Dutchman wants three in his squad to fight for a first-team place.

What is Manchester United’s current goalkeeper situation?

Despite the United boss collecting his first victory in the Old Trafford dugout against Liverpool on Monday, Ten Hag is still expected to be a busy man before next Thursday’s transfer deadline.

The Red Devils need depth and quality in several key areas of the pitch, including a number two goalkeeper.

United currently have David de Gea as their first choice, with veteran stopper Tom Heaton currently providing cover for the Spaniard, who has endured a shaky start to the season.

Regardless, Sheth believes they want to replace Dean Henderson, who has gone out on loan to improve his game-time after falling behind De Gea in the pecking order last term.

What did Sheth say about Manchester United?

Despite already having two senior players between the sticks in De Gea and Heaton, Sheth reckons that Ten Hag wants all bases covered with a third.

He told GIVEMESPORT: “A goalkeeper, 100 per cent they want to strengthen before the transfer window closes. Henderson has gone on loan to Nottingham Forest, and they want a pool of three goalkeepers, whereby all three are capable of going into the first-team.

“Initially to come in as a number two to challenge De Gea, but who knows, to provide enough competition to think ‘well De Gea, your position might come under threat because we’ve got another quality goalkeeper coming in’.”

What goalkeepers have Manchester United been linked with?

According to the Independent, United could look to the Bundesliga to fill the void left in their squad.

The report states the Old Trafford club are ‘considering moves’ for Kevin Trapp and Yann Sommer, who currently play for Eintracht Frankfurt and Borussia Monchengladbach.

It’s believed that Trapp is ‘especially interested’ in making the switch to English football, although United would have to fork out more than €10m, with Frankfurt not willing to sell for less.

But bringing Sommer to the Theatre of Dreams might not be as easy, with the experienced keeper currently number one for Monchengladbach and will want to remain as first choice with the World Cup around the corner.
