Diego Simeone has opened up about Saul Niguez’s time at Atletico Madrid amidst speculation linking his midfielder with a move to Old Trafford.
Manchester United are among a number of clubs said to be vying for Saul Niguez’s signature with arch rivals Liverpool also thought to be keen on the midfielder – though whether or not Niguez would be the right fit for United is another matter.
Despite Atletico Madrid winning La Liga, Saul Niguez endured difficult season and was omitted from Spain’s Euro 2020 squad for this summer’s competition.
Speaking to Marca, Simeone has opened up about the tough time for his midfielder and reflected back on an impressive career so far, saying: “You know better than anyone what Saul has asked and looked for.
“We have known him for eight years. He has shared a lot of time with us.
“What empowered him to be what he was is his ability to play in different places, and when his level dropped, the same thing was used against him.
“But this is not the case, this does not go against him. They are [just] moments. After so much time, players need air and after so many years, the last season was more difficult for him.”
With Paul Pogba potentially on his way out of Old Trafford this summer, Solskjaer is keen to add another midfielder to his ranks.
United have tracked Saul Niguez for some time. The club were heavily linked with a move for the Spanish international last summer prior to signing Donny van de Beek from Ajax.
Solskjaer will have a fight on his hands with Liverpool also interested and Barcelona purportedly keen on the midfielder too, but wherever he ends up – United or elsewhere – they will be hoping Niguez can play himself back into form.
The midfielder has struggled at times under Simeone, going in and out of the starting lineup amid competition from French international Thomas Lemar.
