Man Utd are ready to make wholesale changes this summer with a report naming the 11 players the club plans to offload.
The club spent heavily in summer 2021, with Jadon Sancho and Raphael Varane arriving for significant fees. Cristiano Ronaldo was another high-profile arrival and, while his transfer fee wasn’t significant, his giant wages of £480,000 a week come with their own expense.
However, the club remains no nearer to narrowing the gap on the top two in Manchester City and Liverpool. Indeed, United face a battle to even qualify for next season’s Champions League. As it stands, they currently sit fourth with a four-point cushion to fifth.
But Arsenal, Tottenham and even West Ham will all be in the hunt to pip the Red Devils to a top-four finish. It certainly makes for a nervy end to the season.
Any new manager who comes in will likely want to make the squad their own too. United currently have something of a swelled squad, which can create its own issues.
Nonetheless, Ralf Rangnick has been working hard with director of football John Murtough on the squad’s shape next season. Rangnick will step upstairs from his current interim managerial role to take on a consultancy role with the club.
Man Utd to clear the decks
And as per ESPN, work on the squad is already well underway.
To begin with, Murtough and Rangnick are planning to clear the decks of United’s deadwood. And their report has listed the name of 11 players who will likely be on their way this summer.
The first to depart will be those whose contracts come to an end this summer. To that end, Paul Pogba, Jesse Lingard, Juan Mata and Edinson Cavani will all leave for nothing.
Pogba is likely to move abroad – possible to PSG – though there is talk he could stay within the Premier League and sign for a big rival.
Lingard is also a man in demand and is likely to pick from Newcastle or West Ham.
Mata could well end up heading back to Spain for a final hurrah, while Cavani is now in talks with a Brazilian giant.
Martial and Van de Beek likely to leave
Beyond that, United can expect to bring in significant funds for seven other players they plan to offload.
Anthony Martial and Donny Van de Beek – both currently on loan – head this list. Martial is currently with Sevilla and while they don’t have an option to sign him, he will likely be on the move.
Van de Beek, meanwhile, could look to make his stay at Everton permanent.
Phil Jones will also be shown the door after a decade’s service, while veteran star Nemanja Matic will also likely move on.
United will also expect to raise decent transfer funds for defenders Axel Tuanzebe – currently on loan at Napoli – and Eric Bailly.
The report also names Dean Henderson as the final potential departure. The goalkeeper has fallen out of favour this season and wants to move to resurrect his career and keep alive his World Cup hopes.
He won’t be short of admirers though, with United looking to generate a fee of around £25m for the custodian.
