Solskjaer says talks are ongoing between Man Utd and Pogba over new deal

Borussia Dortmund striker Erling Haaland could be on the move in January as his £64million release clause at the Bundesliga club kicks in once the mid-season transfer window opens.

It had previously been thought that the Norwegian’s clause would not kick in until the summer of 2022 but he will be available for a relative bargain price in the New Year.

Haaland joined the German club from Red Bull Salzburg in January 2020 and the clause that would allow him to leave at a set price two years after that date.

The striking sensation was being valued by Dortmund at a fee in the region of £130million this summer but he could potentially be moving on for less than half that price.

A report from Spanish outlet Marca has claimed that a series of elite European clubs will have their eyes on the future of the striker with a January move possible.

Manchester United have been heavily linked with a move for the 21-year-old, who was previously coached at Molde by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Haaland’s father Alf-Inge enjoyed stints in English football with both Nottingham Forest and Leeds United, with Erling born in Yorkshire and spending his early childhood in England.

There is likely to be an intense battle to secure his signature due to his remarkable scoring record – he has netted 62 goals in 62 matches for the Bundesliga side.

Haaland had previously scored 29 goals in 27 appearances for Red Bull Salzburg with his strike rate unparalleled for a player so young.

Indeed, the Norway international has found the net 20 times in 16 Champions League appearances since the start of the 2019/20 campaign.

United were linked with a move to the striker during his tenure at Salzburg and it is likely they will once again try to land him next year when his release clause commences.

Solskjaer’s side did not make a move for a striker this summer after Edinson Cavani penned a new one-year deal at Old Trafford, but the Uruguayan is likely to return to South America next summer.

His agent Mino Raiola and dad Alf-Inge met with both Real Madrid and Barcelona earlier this year but the financial situation of the Spanish giants – particularly the debt crisis at Barca – is likely to shape his next destination.

Bayern Munich have also been tentatively linked with a move for Haaland, who could theoretically prove to be the long-term successor to Robert Lewandowski – who previously made the switch from Dortmund to Bayern.

Manchester City may also be interested should they not sign a striker this summer, while Chelsea appear to be out of the race following their club record £97.5million addition of Romelu Lukaku.
