Everton have entered the race to sign Manchester United outcast James Garner, according to reports.

Several Premier League clubs are interested in signing the 21-year-old including Southampton, Leicester City and Tottenham and the Toffees are the latest club to start discussions with United over the midfielder.

Erik ten Hag is ready to cash in on Garner, with United looking to raise around £15m-£20m by offloading their academy graduate this summer.

Frank Lampard’s side are keen to bring in Garner ahead of the transfer window closing on September 1, according to The Athletic.

Garner impressed on loan at Nottingham Forest last season, helping them win promotion to the Premier League after winning the Championship play-offs.

It was thought he might head out on a short-term deal again, but United have decided to sell the young Englishman, who has made just seven first-team appearances since making his debut in the 2018-19 season.

Garner was an unused substitute in United’s recent Premier League defeats to Brighton and Brentford and was dropped from the squad for Monday’s win over Liverpool.

It has been a summer of change for United’s midfield, with Paul Pogba, Nemanja Matic, Andreas Pereira, Juan Mata and Jesse Lingard all leaving Old Trafford.

United signed Casemiro in a £59.5m deal from Real Madrid while Christian Eriksen arrived on a free transfer from Brentford.

Meanwhile, Barcelona’s Frenkie de Jong got United fans excited after ‘liking’ several posts on Instagram following the 2-1 victory over Liverpool on Monday.

The Red Devils have spent much of the summer pursuing the Netherlands international midfielder, who was thought to be reluctant to leave Camp Nou despite United agreeing a fee earlier in the window.

However, he certainly seems to be keeping a close eye on what is happening at United, with eagle-eyed fans spotting that he had liked a post on Instagram showing Casemiro’s arrival at Old Trafford ahead of being presented to the crowd.
