‘Frustrated’ Man Utd stars urge Ten Hag to stick to his guns over key issue

Erik ten Hag’s squad want Marcus Rashford to continue playing up front this season for Man Utd after his brilliant display against Arsenal.

The Red Devils beat the Gunners last weekend 3-1 with Rashford scoring twice in the second half to seal a fourth victory on the bounce for Ten Hag’s men.

Victory over Arsenal saw Man Utd rise to fifth in the early Premier League standings after bouncing back from two losses in their first two matches of the new season.

Anthony Martial was great up front for the Red Devils in pre-season but an early-season injury has seen him play just 45 minutes in the Premier League so far.

Cristiano Ronaldo is their other option as a centre-forward but Ten Hag has chosen to start him on the bench in all but one Premier League match this campaign.

Ten Hag thinks Rashford could “become one of the world’s best” with a consistent run of matches leading the line and the Man Utd players hope he sticks to his guns and keeps the England international up front.

A source told The Sun: “The manager wants Marcus to be United’s No 1 striker and lead the line up front. He believes Marcus has the ability to become one of the world’s best and wants him to express himself in matches.

“He is always telling him to use his pace and skills when he gets a chance. He told Marcus he will easily score 20 this season.

“They have a great relationship and Marcus is really happy.”

On the win over Arsenal, the source added: “Ten Hag told them, ‘This is the real United. We should be top, not Arsenal’.

“It is felt their only title threat is City and if they slip up, then they believe they can capitalise.”

Ronaldo missed the majority of pre-season for ‘family reasons’ after widespread reports claimed the Portugal international had asked to leave Man Utd in the summer.

The 37-year-old wanted to play in the Champions League but there was a lack of interest from other clubs in the summer and he eventually stayed at Old Trafford.

And his Man Utd team-mates are reportedly hoping that Ronaldo remains out of the starting XI with a source claiming the players “feel pressured” when he’s on the pitch.

The source continued: “As long as Ronaldo starts on the bench, the players have the confidence to express themselves.

“With Ronaldo on the pitch, the team feel pressured. All the players loved it when Ronaldo came back but they’re frustrated he missed pre-season.

“Ronaldo’s not up to speed and relies on instinct — but that doesn’t work in Ten Hag’s system.”
