Ole Gunnar Solskjaer hails ‘best in the world’ David De Gea after Villarreal win

Jesse Lingard was not with his Manchester United team-mates when they checked into The Lowry Hotel ahead of Saturday’s match against Everton at Old Trafford.

Lingard made a real impact off the bench in United’s dramatic 2-1 win over Villarreal on Wednesday and was therefore expected to push for a start against the Toffees.

While it was Cristiano Ronaldo who scored the 95th-minute winner at Old Trafford, Lingard was heavily involved in the build-up after coming on as a late substitute.

However, his involvement in today’s 12.30pm kick-off is not yet certain after the 28-year-old midfielder did not join the rest of the squad at The Lowry last night.

According to Manchester Evening News , Lingard was absent because he was celebrating his daughter’s third birthday on Friday evening.

It remains to be seen if he will link up with the squad before kick-off.

Luke Shaw should be involved against Everton after joining his team-mates on Friday night.

Shaw suffered a shoulder injury in United’s 1-0 defeat to Aston Villa last weekend and subsequently missed Wednesday’s 2-1 victory over Villarreal with a bout of sickness.

“Luke feels better in himself,” Solskjaer said. “He’s been ill but he’s still got the shoulder injury. We’ve got to make a decision on him.”

Solskjaer’s decision on the left-back could be complicated by Alex Telles’ impressive performance against Villarreal.

Telles filled in for Shaw and capped his start with a brilliant volley from the edge of the box which made it 1-1 after Paco Alcacer’s opening goal.

United will definitely be without captain Harry Maguire, who remains sidelined with a calf injury sustained in the Villa loss, while young winger Amad is also unavailable.

“Harry and Amad are still out, so we didn’t lose anyone on Wednesday night,” Solskjaer said.

There was also an exciting update over Marcus Rashford in the pre-match press conference, with Solskjaer confirming that the forward is on track with his recovery from a shoulder operation.

“Marcus is fit, he’s worked really hard, but he’s not had any contact (until now),” Solskjaer said.

“If his shoulder can take the contact now, he should be ready after the internationals.”

Victory against Rafa Benitez’s Everton would send United top of the Premier League, although it could be a brief stay at the summit, with Chelsea playing Southampton at 3pm.

Meanwhile, the current top two face off when Liverpool host Manchester City on Sunday and either of those sides could head into the October internationals in pole position.
