Solskjaer: Lingard still has a big part to play

Jesse Lingard has been teaching Cristiano Ronaldo his signature celebration in Manchester United training as he joked about helping his teammate.

The midfielder has already netted twice this season having returned from his loan spell at West Ham.

Lingard is looking to become a regular under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer but has had to make do with substitute cameos thus far.

That hasn’t stopped him scoring against Newcastle and the Hammers however, the latter being a late winner.

Lingard has been known to celebrate by making his initials with his hands.

He has posted pictures on Instagram of him showing Ronaldo how do imitate him with the caption: “Everyone can use a helping hand….We got there in the end”.

How has Lingard’s return gone?

The United midfielder could not be in a more different place to this time last year.

Before going out on loan to West Ham in January Lingard hadn’t made a single league appearance for the Red Devils.

At the Hammers though he rediscovered his best form and that has carried over in Manchester.

A goal against his former club late on snatched three points for the Red Devils and was a sign of Lingard’s quality.

The continued emergence of Mason Greenwood coupled with the additions of Jadon Sancho and Ronaldo were always going to make starting a challenge.

That is before you throw in the likes of Marcus Rashford, Edinson Cavani and Anthony Martial.

Nevertheless Lingard has impressed when given the opportunity, even if they have been few and far between.

A mistake in their Champions League defeat to Young Boys was a blow, but he reacted by scoring the winner at West Ham.

What does the future hold?

Well if his decision to reject a new deal is anything to go by – a move away.

Lingard is into the final 12 months of his contract and turned down the club’s latest offer.

At this early stage of the season he is yet to start a league game and Solskjaer’s pre-season comments are perhaps telling.

“I think Jesse’s first priority is to get into our team,” he said. “I think whenever your employer is Man United, I think that’s your first priority and always is.

The Man Utd midfielder grabbed a late winner at West Ham recently

“Jesse is back to his fitness, he played really well in the behind-closed-doors game on Tuesday and he’s come back bubbly and in good shape. He’s got a big part to play.”

A part to play appears to be a squad role if this year is anything to go by.

Since his comments Solskjaer has said: “Jesse was quite clear he wants to fight for his place and be part of a Man United team that is going places.

“I can’t speak for Jesse now but he’s really contributing.”
