Chelsea icon Joe Cole has urged Manchester United to chase a move for Aston Villa playmaker John McGinn when the transfer window reopens ahead of next season. The Red Devils have been in the market for a new deep-lying midfielder since the end of the previous campaign but have failed to land any players to strengthen their options in the role as of yet.
A number of high-profile targets have been linked with United in recent months, including the likes of Leicester City maestro Youri Tielemans and AC Milan contract rebel Franck Kessie.
McGinn has also been mentioned in connection with the Old Trafford club and was said to have cropped up on their radar in the January transfer window.
United’s biggest problem area is undoubtedly in the middle of the park, with the likes of Scott McTominay and Fred struggling to impress over the course of this season.
Both players have been subjected to heavy criticism on plenty of recent occasions and are yet to establish themselves as a top-class partnership with the ability to compete for Premier League titles.
Cole believes that McGinn could offer United the perfect solution to their midfield woes, with his single-minded approach to the game standing him in good stead to succeed at the club if he joins ahead of next season.

“You look at that club and you constantly hear noises about this player is unhappy because the manager said this and this player’s unhappy because he’s been given time of here and he didn’t want it and all this,” Cole told BT Sport.
“You just want lads like him through the door. First of all they have to be good enough and he’s certainly good enough as a footballer but that is so valuable for a manager in the current climate.
“You know you haven’t got to mollycoddle him, he’s going to come in and do his job. He’s not an Instagram footballer, he gets on with it and does his job.”
McGinn was previously linked with a move to United three years ago after playing a significant role in helping Aston Villa to return to the Premier League via the Championship play-offs.
He eventually went on to sign a new deal at Villa Park before publicly dismissing the speculation over a potential move to Old Trafford by underlining his commitment to the west Midlands outfit.
“The club came to me at the start of the summer and basically said to me: ‘Listen, we’ve got a lot of work to do and we want to know if you want to be here’,” McGinn told talkSPORT back in August 2019.
“It was pretty straight forward. Nothing else crossed my mind, I wanted to be at Villa this season and the club wanted that.”
Meanwhile, John Barnes recently echoed Cole’s comments by insisting that McGinn would represent a shrewd acquisition for United as he would have little difficulty in adjusting to the step up in quality.

“If John McGinn wants to move to Manchester United, he could,” the former Liverpool winger told BonusCodeBets.
“If that is what he wants to do, he could make a step up. I am not sure why he would want to leave Aston Villa, they’re a great club for him, and he can achieve whatever he wants there.
“If he wants to move on from Villa Park and sign for Manchester United, he’d definitely be a good signing for them. He is a player that gives one hundred percent, is so committed, and gets into the team easily, which is what you want if you’re a Manchester United fan.
“McGinn might not be the sexiest name compared to other players, but he’s such a top performer.”
