The Champions League was riddled with drama once again on Wednesday night as Matchday 2 came to a close.
Barcelona’s misery continued apace as they were soundly thumped 3-0 by Benfica while reigning champions Chelsea fell short against Juventus in Turin.
Robert Lewandowski was up to his old tricks as he netted a brace for Bayern Munich but it was at Old Trafford where the drama was really ramped up.
After an insipid first half, Manchester United deservedly went behind when Paco Alcacer found a way past a stoic David De Gea early in the second stanza.
To their credit, though, United pushed forward in search of an equaliser and got their reward through an Alex Telles missile from outside the box.
Telles pounced on a floated Bruno Fernades free kick to smash a thunderous strike into the corner.
Chances then came and went for United but the game completely flipped when Edinson Cavani and Jesse Lingard came on.
Then, as five minutes of stoppage time ticked away, none other than Cristiano Ronaldo stepped up to drive a dagger through the hearts of the Villareal lads.
As United threw everything forward, the Portuguese superstar was in the right place at the right time to drill home from an angle and steal a last-gasp win for the Red Devils.
The Theatre of Dreams absolutely erupted as Ronaldo wheeled away and roared in celebration.
The final whistle came only seconds later as all gathered inside the famous old stadium breathed a collective sigh of relief.
Two rather high-profile United fans certainly looked very happy with the last-second drama as cameras focused on Usain Bolt and Sir Alex Ferguson in the crowd.
The pair were seen embracing and laughing as they made their way down the steps in the aftermath of Ronaldo’s superb strike.
Unsurprisingly, fans absolutely loved the sight of their greatest ever manager and the world’s fastest man giggling away following a United win.
After what has been a tricky few weeks for the club, the three points will come as a welcome respite from the growing criticism that was beginning to build.
They will now look to build on Ronaldo’s heroics as they bid to put their early season blip well and truly behind them.
