The goal was the ideal way to mark the end of Sheridan’s latest spell in charge of the club. The former Sheffield Wednesday midfielder, who was born in Stretford and scored the winner against United in the 1991 Rumbelows League Cup final, has stepped down from his fourth stint as manager.
So it proved to be an emotional occasion at Boundary Park with Sheridan deciding to call time on management because he wants to try other things and “to be happier”.
“I don’t cry much but I nearly came to tears,” he admitted. “The fans are unbelievable.”
