Manchester United and Arsenal could go head-to-head in the summer and battle it out for the signature of Benfica forward and Uruguayan international Darwin Nunez.

The 22-year-old is attracting plenty of potential suitors for his efforts in Portugal with 21 goals in 23 league games this term as well as five in nine in the Champions League – proving he is a man for the biggest stage which will undoubtedly make him more attractive to European giants. Both Manchester United and Arsenal scouts were amongst those reportedly in attendance specifically to watch Nunez as he got on the scoresheet in the Champions League against Liverpool.

Nunez has received plenty of praise this season and has a keen admirer in Luis Suarez. The duo are teammates at international level for Uruguay and Suarez has given hints previously as to how highly he rates his fellow countryman, revealing he recommended him to Barcelona during his time at the club.

“I already told Barça about him when he was at Almería, the former Liverpool striker explained during an interview with Gerard Romero on Twitch. “But I won’t say more because then they accuse us of suggesting signings.”

The young striker has long been in-demand from clubs across the continent, with Brighton & Hove Albion seeing their bid of £27million rejected over a year ago. Chelsea were rumoured to be interested in the striker, but the speculation came prior to the Blues mega-money deal for Romelu Lukaku last summer.

Nunez’s agent raised eyebrows at the back-end of last year when he admitted a number of clubs have contacted him over a potential move for the forward.

“Darwin is ready to play in any team on the globe,” he told Inter News. “Various top-level teams have contacted us, but for the moment the head is on continuing and growing with Benfica and with the Uruguayan national team: this is how important things will come.”

Arsenal’s need for a striker is well-documented, with both of their current options in Alexandre Lacazette and Eddie Nketiah struggling to find the back of the net all season. Nunez has netted more than four times the amount of goals both of the aforementioned duo have combined.

The average age of United’s attack force means the Red Devils are also in the market for further additions, with Nunez’s agent previously comparing him to someone already on the books at Old Trafford in Edinson Cavani. “They have a lot of things in common, we’re convinced that Darwin is destined for great things.”

Nunez last appearance saw him add to his tally for the season against Premier League titans Liverpool in the first-leg of Benfica’s Champions League quarter final clash. The Reds ran out 3-1 winners at the Estádio da Luz but Nunez was a shining light for the hosts.
