Monaco confirmed that Mitchell will continue to report directly to president Dmitry Rybolovlev.

The news comes as a blow to both Man Utd and Chelsea.

Chelsea were hoping to fill the post left vacant since Michael Emenalo left in 2017.

And at Old Trafford, incoming boss Erik ten Hag and then-interim manager Ralf Rangnick were said to be pushing for Mitchell.

Rangnick was sold on the idea of the 40-year-old, who worked at the likes of RB Leipzig, on joining.

Despite missing out on transfer guru Mitchell, both Premier League clubs are preparing moves for a number of targets.

Chelsea are said to have an agreement with Sevilla defender Jules Kounde, who they nearly signed last summer.

And with Todd Boehly’s takeover set to go through, reports suggest RB Leipzig’s Christopher Nkunku and Josko Gvardiol are targets.

West Ham man Declan Rice is also believed to be on boss Thomas Tuchel’s wishlist.

As for Man Utd, a number of Ajax players are being linked with a Ten Hag reunion.

Pacey centre-back Jurrien Timber could follow his former boss to Old Trafford.

The 20-year-old is believed to be available for a fee around £30million.
