Erik ten Hag looks set to become the new Manchester United boss in the summer – but the Ajax boss looks unrecognisable from his playing days.
Ten Hag has turned Ajax back into a European superpower, and he was at the helm of the side that reached the Champions League semi-finals in 2019. Despite that side being raided by Europe’s elite, Ten Hag has kept them reaching the knockouts.
The Dutchman spent the entirety of his playing career in his homeland, and most of his caps came for his local side FC Twente. And a picture of Ten Hag during his playing days at Twente has remerged.
Ten Hag is quite recognisable these days, with his suave suits and coats, well-groomed beard and bald head.
However, few Ajax fans, let alone United supporters, will be able to pick out the blonde-haired baby-faced boss smiling at the camera during Twente’s annual photoshoot. The Dutchman has also yet to dabble with growing bears – making the snaps look like two different people.
Ten Hag’s Twente were still a decade away from their unprecedented success under Steve McClaren, when Ten Hag was assistant, and the team is hardly littered with stars. The only name recognisable is Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink, whose comically large surname on the back of a Hull City shirt occasionally goes viral.

According to The Athletic, Ten Hag and United have agreed to ‘a agreement in principle’.
The Dutchman will arrive on a four-year deal, but United are still to negotiate a deal with Ajax, and that won’t be likely until after Ajax face PSV Eindhoven in the Dutch Cup final on April 17.
