Anthony Martial has joined fellow Manchester United player Paul Pogba on the radar of Juventus in a transfer plan that may cost the Italians nothing, reports claim.
Martial is currently seeing the season out on loan at Sevilla after wanting to escape the situation he found himself in at Old Trafford. However, the Spaniards do not have the option to buy him permanently at the end of the spell.
Even if they did, it is questionable whether they would exercise it. The La Liga side are more likely to look elsewhere.
But Martial does not seem to have a future back at Man Utd, either. It means they will have to find a new solution for him in the summer, before his contract expires two years later.
According to La Stampa, Martial is now a target for Juventus as he awaits another change of scenery. The Serie A side are hoping to strengthen up front as they aim to get back to the summit of Italian football.
Juventus sold Cristiano Ronaldo to Man Utd last year, which would obviously leave a void for any team. They took Moise Kean back from Everton as a stop-gap measure and then acquired the highly-rated Dusan Vlahovic from Fiorentina in January.
There have been doubts over Kean’s future, though. What’s more, number 10 Paulo Dybala is due to leave the club as a free agent. Therefore, Juventus could want another attacker.
Martial has enough versatility to be a useful option for them. His lack of a past in Italian football is not off-putting; instead, he has been a long-term target for them.
La Stampa have written that they want to sign him on loan with an option to buy next summer. In theory, they are trying not to pay anything up front.
Martial to make same move as Pogba?
That way, they could take two United players for free, since they are also working for the return of Paul Pogba when his contract in Manchester expires in June.
They signed Pogba the last time his United deal ran down and developed him into the world’s most expensive player within four years. After an inconsistent time back in Manchester, though, the France international may prefer to pick up from where he left off in Turin.
And he could be followed by Martial if United are willing to accept the deal on the terms Juventus want. There is no mention of how much a future option to buy may be worth.
But it is made clear that Martial is almost certain to be sent away from Old Trafford again.
