Man Utd ‘have made transfer enquiry’ as details emerge ahead of Wolves clash | Football | Sport

Manchester United have reportedly enquired about signing Denis Zakaria while the transfer window is open this month. The midfielder has sparkled for Bundesliga side Borussia Monchengladbach for a number of years. Yet the Red Devils aren’t alone when it comes to securing his signature in January.

Manchester United have endured a torrid season so far, with both Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Ralf Rangnick struggling to get the best from the current squad.

While Cristiano Ronaldo has dazzled up top since his summer return, it’s the club’s midfield that appears to be its weakest link.

United are well-stocked for players in that department, having the likes of Scott McTominay, Fred, Paul Pogba, Nemanja Matic and Donny van de Beek currently on their books.

But with performances still failing to live up to expectations, the club could be about to take action.

According to journalist Jonathan Shrager, United have recently enquired about signing Zakaria this month.

The Switzerland international has been in fine form this season, scoring twice from 15 Bundesliga games.

Mourinho was happy with his squad in January 2018 but, when Alexis Sanchez became available, sanctioned a deal for the Chile international.

Sanchez disappointed at Old Trafford, however, scoring just five goals before being offloaded to Serie A giants Inter Milan.

Under Solskjaer, United signed Bruno Fernandes and Odion Ighalo in the January transfer window of 2020.

Fernandes has been a huge hit ever since, establishing himself as a shining light for the modern era.

Ighalo, however, spent most of his time stuck on the bench before his loan spell expired at the end of 2020.

Zakaria would undoubtedly improve the club’s midfield.

And he could even sign as a replacement for Van de Beek or Pogba, both of which have been linked with January exits.

Speaking ahead of United’s clash with Wolves, though, Rangnick confirmed he wanted Van de Beek to stay.

The midfielder has struggled for action since arriving from Ajax nearly two years ago.

And Rangnick, when quizzed on how Van de Beek can get into his team, said: “Well, just work hard.

“So far as I have got to know him he’s got a top mentality, he works hard in every training session.

“He’s a team player through and through and there will be games where he will get his chance to play I’m sure.

“I also had a longer conversation with him last week about that and, again, of course it’s difficult for him right now because he also wants to play for the Dutch national team.

“He wants to qualify for himself and play in the World Cup in Qatar and in order to do that he needs to get game time here.

“But I still believe that we should keep him, that he should stay here, definitely until the end of this season and try to get as much game time as he possibly can.”
