Manchester United legend Jaap Stam says Harry Maguire must start performing well in training again if he is to break back into the United first-team. The Red Devils skipper has found himself out of the starting line-up in recent weeks after a string of poor performances left new boss Erik ten Hag with no choice but test other options.
Maguire has become something of a figure of fun over the course of the last year with the centre-back failing to perform to the levels he showed in his early United career and for his national team. He appears to have suffered a huge drop in confidence, something which is regularly affecting his performances, while the captain’s armband appears to weigh heavy on his shoulders.
He was dropped by Ten Hag following the abject 4-0 defeat to Brentford earlier in the season, being replaced by former Real Madrid star Raphael Varane. The Frenchman has struck up a fantastic partnership with Lisandro Martinez in his absence, making the prospects of the England international returning to the team in the near future appear bleak.
Now, Red Devils legend Stam has offered his advice to the struggling defender, with the Dutchman knowing more than most about how to excel at centre-half for the club. He believes the former Leicester and Hull player needs to show his quality in training in order to increase his chances of first-team opportunities.

“And then you need to show yourself, you need to knock on the door and say ‘I’m going to be stepping in, and I’m never going to be out again’. You need to convince the coach, the manager, and the coaching staff now.”
It remains to be seen whether or not Maguire is able to work his way back into the United line-up – but it looks certain to be a difficult task given the current form of Varane and Martinez.
