Man Utd in transfer blow as striker target Brian Brobbey joins old side Ajax in £13m switch from RB Leipzig

AJAX have re-signed striker Brian Brobbey from RB Leipzig for an initial £13.9million.

Manchester United were linked with Brobbey earlier in the transfer window, with boss Erik ten Hag interested in linking up with the 20-year-old for a third time.

The Red Devils have missed out, however, with the Dutchman opting to make his return to his hometown team a permanent one.

Brobbey joined Ajax’s academy as an eight-year-old, rising through the ranks before making his first team bow.

Ten Hag spotted the forward’s talent, giving him his debut in October 2020.

Brobbey scored that day against Fortuna Sittard, but his initial stay in Ajax’s first team would be a brief one.

In March 2021 it was announced that the Dutch youth international would join German side RB Leipzig on a free transfer at the end of the season.

Brobbey made 36 appearances in total during his first Ajax campaign, scoring 15 goals as a teenager.

Opportunities were harder to come by in Germany, with Brobbey making just 13 goalless outings for RB Leipzig.

In January he returned to Ajax on loan – bagging seven goals in 11 Eredivisie appearances before the end of the season.

Ten Hag, 52, showed an interest in bringing Brobbey with him to Man United.

But Ajax have won the race, paying a £13.9m fee that could rise to £16.4m with add-ons.

Brobbey has penned a five-year contract in Amsterdam.

Ajax have had a busy summer – receiving big fees for Lisandro Martinez, Ryan Gravenberch and Sebastien Haller.

They have reinvested heavily, with Steven Bergwijn from Spurs costing £26m and Calvin Bassey from Rangers setting them back £22.5m.

Man United may have to look elsewhere in the striker market, with the possibility of having to replace Cristiano Ronaldo looming.

Edinson Cavani also left on a free transfer at the end of last season.

United have continued to be linked with Ajax attacker Antony, although fellow Ten Hag old boy Frenkie de Jong reportedly doesn’t fancy life in Manchester.
