Jadon Sancho broke the deadlock in the 21st minute after being picked out by Marcus Rashford, before Che Adams equalised immediately after the break.

That is now the third game in a row in all competitions that United have went ahead in the first half, only to concede in the second period to cost them a win.

A Middlesbrough comeback saw the Championship outfit knock United out of the FA Cup at the fourth round stage.

Meanwhile bottom of the table Burnley fought back to claim a point at Turf Moor earlier in the week.

The draw against Southampton leaves United in fifth spot – a point behind fourth-placed West Ham with a game in hand.

Though Ralf Rangnick’s men have played more matches than close rivals Arsenal, Wolves and Tottenham.

And club legend Neville has slammed his former employers for giving away the ball too many times and losing possession regularly.

He tweeted during the clash: “Breaking every rule in the book here United on how to chase a goal!

“Don’t give fouls away, don’t give the ball away, don’t force it, don’t lose your discipline and chase the ref etc etc!”

Interim gaffer Rangnick echoed similar views as he stated that his team lacked the necessary composure.

He told BT Sport: “This is not an easy team to play against but we, again, lost a little bit of composure.

“We took, again, wrong decisions – sometimes under pressure and sometimes not under pressure.

“This is where we just have to get better whenever we prepare the team for the next possible game.

“As I said in the last four or five games, we started extremely well, we had an excellent half hour again today, but in the end it’s about playing in that way for more than just one half.”

Neville’s ex-team-mate Paul Scholes was also heavily critical of United, as he declared they are ‘so easy to play against’.
