Manchester United have ended their interest in signing Alvaro Morata after baulking at Atletico Madrid’s €35million (£29.6m) asking price.

Erik Ten Hag is eager for more additions at Old Trafford before the transfer window closes on 1 September with a winger and forward areas the Dutchman is keen to strengthen.

United are hoping to wrap up a deal to sign Antony from Ajax to boost their wide options and have been linked with a number of options up top with Cristiano Ronaldo’s future at the club uncertain.

Former Chelsea star Morata is among the players to have been offered to United in recent weeks but according to The Athletic, United have no interest in pursing a deal after deciding Atletico’s valuation for the 29-year-old was too high.

Morata joined Chelsea from Real Madrid for £60m in 2017 but managed just 16 goals in 45 Premier League appearances before returning to Spain to join Atletico.

United were also linked with moves for Morata’s Atletico teammates Matheus Cuhna and Joao Felix along with Leicester City star Jamie Vardy.

PSV Eindhoven’s Cody Gakpo has also been considered. The 23-year-old, who scored 21 and assisted 15 goals last season, was unable to prevent his side crashing out of the Champions League this week, with PSV eliminated at the play-off stage by Rangers.

Their failure to qualify for the group stages of the competition was set to hand United a boost in their attempts to land the forward.

However, latest reports suggest United have now cooled their interest.

United are thought to be progressing in their attempts to bring Antony to Old Trafford having agreed personal terms with the winger.

Latest reports now suggest the Brazil international is now urging Ajax to accept United’s latest offer that is thought to be in the excess of £76m. The Dutch champions however have stood firm this summer and are demanding £84.5m for the 22-year=old.

According to De Telegraaf, Antony wants the transfer completed within the next 48 hours and has already agreed a five-year contract with United.

The report claims that Antony’s team are already house hunting in Manchester, while the player is urging Ajax’s technical directors Klaas-Jan Huntelaar and Gerry Hamstra to allow his move to Old Trafford.
