Rangnick explains Ronaldo absence for Man Utd in derby defeat

Cristiano Ronaldo is back in Manchester after missing Sunday’s derby clash.

The Portuguese forward’s absence at the Etihad Stadium was notable as United fell to an embarrassing 4-1 defeat to their bitter rivals Manchester City.

Interim manager Ralf Rangnick had said Ronaldo was ruled out due to a hip flexor injury before it was revealed the forward had subsequently flown home to his native Portugal – a move which is said to have ‘surprised’ his teammates, according to reports.

Details of the whole incident continue to come to light, with reports now claiming Ronaldo was ‘furious’ about not being involved in the derby.

And on Tuesday Ronaldo returned to work at United’s Carrington training complex – and he had two bodyguards in tow.

Ronaldo ‘furious’ with snub

Cristiano Ronaldo was reportedly left ‘furious’ when Ralf Rangnick told him he would not be involved in Sunday’s Premier League derby with Manchester City.

It is claimed that although United’s physios ruled the forward out due to a hip flexor injury, the Portuguese was left unhappy at Rangnick’s decision to leave him out of the matchday squad.

“Cristiano had some problems with his hip flexor on Friday and since then, he didn’t train,” the Red Devils interim manager said ahead of kick-off.

His teammates were said to have been left shocked when he then failed to report to The Lowry Hotel on the eve of the derby.

Act of defiance

Cristiano Ronaldo is understood to have flown to his native Portugal after finding out he would not be involved in the Manchester derby on Sunday.

While Ralf Rangnick has claimed the forward suffered a recurrence of the hip issue which prevented him from featuring against Aston Villa in January, contrary reports have claimed the interim boss made the decision to leave him out himself.

Doubts have been raised over Rangnick’s explanation for Ronaldo’s absence, with The Sun claiming that the attacker’s future at Old Trafford is now in ‘serious doubt’.

Rangnick requires his players to rehabilitate from injuries close to home rather than jet abroad for home comforts – meaning his departure could well be interpreted as an act of defiance against the club’s rules.

Bodyguard return

Cristiano Ronaldo returned to training on Tuesday following his Manchester derby absence.

The Portuguese forward wasn’t even in the stands for the 4-1 defeat at the Etihad Stadium after not being named in Ralf Rangnick’s matchday squad.

But the forward has now returned to work following the incident and arrived at United’s Carrington training ground in a luxury Cadillac – and was escorted by two bodyguards in a Range Rover following closely behind.
