Rangnick confirms plans to hold talks with incoming boss ten Hag

Erik ten Hag has been handed his first blow as Manchester United manager after failing to bring in a trusted assistant.

The Dutchman is set to take the reins at Old Trafford at the end of the season with a huge overhaul of the club’s players and staff set to begin. Ten Hag had hoped to bring in Fred Rutten, but the Dutch coach turned the offer from United down.

It comes as Graeme Souness has dismissed reports linking Paul Pogba with a summer move to bitter rivals Manchester City as the “signing would run counter to the way Pep Guardiola likes to run a football team”. And Dion Dublin has suggested Cristiano Ronaldo could seek a move away from Old Trafford this summer.

And after the game former United forward Dublin drew attention to the fact that Ronaldo was seen laughing following one of the goals – saying it is a “tell-tale sign” he could be thinking about leaving.

The Frenchman appears set to walk away from Old Trafford for nothing for a second time with his contract set to expire at the end of the season – and recent reports have linked him with a move to bitter rivals City. Souness says he was “astounded” to read the reports, and said he thinks the move would “defy football logic”.

He has suggested Pogba may not suit Pep Guardiola’s style of play, and that the “intensity of the Premier League have proved too much for him”.

Ten Hag suffers first blow

Incoming Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag has suffered his first blow after failing in his bid to appoint Fred Rutten to his coaching staff.

Ten Hag had hoped to bring the 59-year-old with him to Old Trafford but the former manager of PSV, Feyenoord Twente, Schalke and Anderlecht has instead decided to become a part of Ruud van Nistelrooy’s coaching staff at PSV. Rutten has said he wants to stay in his home country so that he can regularly see his family – something he wouldn’t be able to regularly do if he moved to England.
