Ralf Rangnick reviews Leeds win

Manchester United overcome a fierce Elland Road crowd and the weather to clinch a 4-2 win over Leeds United on Sunday afternoon.

Despite going 2-0 up, United were pegged back after Leeds scored twice in 24 seconds to pull level.

United went on claim the three points in a match full of drama and interim boss Ralf Rangnick’s substitutions played a key role in the win.

Fred and Anthony Elanga came off the bench to score the third and fourth goal which led to former United captain Roy Keane changing his mind when it comes to Brazilian Fred.

And the opening goal from current skipper Harry Maguire was the club’s first from a corner this season, something the England international said had left him embarrassed at such a poor stat.

Substitutes make a difference

The decisions a manager makes during the game can often be more important than the ones made beforehand.

Rangnick introduced Fred and Elanga after the break and both had a key say in the result of the game, finding the back of the net to clinch the game for the Reds.

In recent weeks, the German coach has left it too late to make substitutions but in this instance he got it spot on as United went on to win a massive clash in the race for fourth.

Reds end unwanted stat

United’s opening goal against Leeds broke an unwanted stat this season.

Maguire’s header from Luke Shaw’s corner was the team’s first from a set-piece this season, their first goal from 139 corner attempts.

It’s been a difficult time for a team that hired a set-piece coach in the summer under former boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

“I’m a big part in that set-play routine and trying to score from corners but as a team, as a group, we’ve been nowhere near good enough,” Maguire said after the final whistle.

Keane praises Fred

It’s not often Keane changes his mind on anything, let alone a player.

But speaking to Sky Sports after United’s win, the combative midfielder praised the Brazilian for his impact off the bench.

Fred’s left-footed strike restored United’s lead and provided the platform for the team to see out the game.

Keane claimed after: “Fred has definitely improved his finishing and attacking play in the last few months.”
