Man Utd news: Luke Shaw brilliantly hailed by Bayern’s Alphonso Davies – ‘He’s better!’ | Football | Sport

Bayern Munich defender Alphonso Davies has agreed with claims that Luke Shaw is a better player than him after the idea was suggested by a number of his TikTok followers during a live session on Wednesday. The Manchester United man has emerged as one of the Premier League’s finest left-backs since the beginning of last season and played a starring role for England at Euro 2020.

Shaw made 47 appearances in all competitions for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side throughout the previous campaign and was named as the club’s Player of the Year as a welcome reward for his efforts.

He has established himself as a vital cog in the machine at Old Trafford, with his marauding runs down the left flank and astute defensive capabilities helping United to finish the season as Premier League runners-up behind Manchester City.

The 26-year-old has struggled at times since joining the club from Southampton, especially during Jose Mourinho’s time in charge of the Red Devils.

However, he now appears to be fulfilling his lofty potential and will not be looking back as he aims to help United go one better and lift the Premier League title for the first time in nine years next season.

Shaw’s form has led many onlookers to consider him as one of the best left-backs on the planet alongside the likes of Davies, who has already underlined his world-class credentials with Bayern despite his tender years.

The 20-year-old was quizzed on the United star by fans on TikTok, who suggested that he was ‘clear’ at the top of the order, to the confusion of Davies.

“I just saw one [comment] like: ‘Luke Shaw is clear’,” said the Canadian ace. “Can someone explain it to me? I want to know what that means.”

Davies was then informed that ‘clear’ means better than himself, to which he replied: “Oh okay, I get it now, it means he’s better.

“Yeah, I mean, he is! He’s a really good player.”

The Bayern defender was ruled out of Canada’s squad for this summer’s Gold Cup with an ankle injury, but will be hoping to return to full fitness for the start of the new Bundesliga season.

The Canucks are currently preparing for their quarter-final meeting with Costa Rica on Monday in Davies’ absence.

Meanwhile, his praise of Shaw has been echoed by fans and pundits alike in recent weeks, particularly as a result of the Red Devils man’s performances for England at the Euros.

Former United defender Rio Ferdinand waxed lyrical over Shaw after his pivotal role in the quarter-final thrashing of Ukraine, with the 42-year-old hailing his ability to excel on a consistent basis for both club and country.

“He’s had a real burst of form,” Ferdinand told the BBC.

“This season he’s been fabulous, his delivery has been exquisite in this tournament and the timing of his runs.

“It comes from the pressure to win the ball back. He dives in where it’s dangerous defensively, he has bravery, execution from set pieces in vital moments of the game.

“At times it comes down to maturity, down to footballing ability, so many more components make up a player. Being in the right place at the right time, having the right management, staff and players around you.”
