Rangnick explains Ronaldo absence for Man Utd in derby defeat

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has sent Ralf Rangnick an apparent tip after Cristiano Ronaldo’s absence from Sunday’s derby game.

Kevin De Bruyne and Riyad Mahrez both struck two goals each as City condemned rivals Manchester United to a humbling 4-1 defeat at the Etihad Stadium in the Premier League.

But superstar forward Cristiano Ronaldo wasn’t even in Manchester for the crunch fixture in a move that reportedly surprised his United teammates.

And Guardiola even commented on the Portuguese striker’s absence as he appeared to give counterpart Ralf Ranick a tip over how he should line up his side.

It comes after Sir Alex Ferguson was harassed by a Manchester City supporter after the match.

Sir Alex harassed

A Manchester City fan harrassed legendary United manager Sir Alex Ferguson following Sunday’s derby.

Sir Alex had attended the Premier League fixture at the Etihad Stadium as he witnessed his old side being thrashed 4-1.

But as he was making his way to his vehicle after the final whistle, Sir Alex was approached by a goading fan, who used the ex-United manager’s own words against him as he made fun at the Red Devils legend.

Ronaldo ‘surprised’ teammates

Cristiano Ronaldo ‘surprised’ his Manchester United teammates by not attending the derby on Sunday afternoon, it has been claimed.

Ronaldo was ruled out of the fixture through injury by the club’s doctors following a hip injury, which meant he also didn’t train with his teammates on Friday ahead of the tie.

But instead of travelling to the Etihad for the Manchester derby, reports have claimed Ronaldo flew home to his native Portugal – leaving his teammates stunned.

And it is claimed at least some of the United dressing room feel Ronaldo’s presence at the stadium “could have been beneficial”.

Rangnick sent tip

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has appeared to suggest that United are able to press more effectively without Cristiano Ronaldo in the line-up.

Ronaldo was absent for the crunch fixture due to injury as his side fell to a crushing 4-1 defeat to their bitter rivals.

And according to the City boss, United were “so aggressive” without their star man – something his team had not been ready for before the match kicked off.

And the City boss may have given Rangnick a tip on how best to set-up his side if they want to play the pressing brand of football that the German is known for.
