Man Utd offered ‘gettable’ and in-form Premier League forward after Liverpool response becomes clear

Manchester United and Liverpool have both been invited into the running for the transfer of Chelsea target and current Brighton star Leandro Trossard, according to a reporter.

Trossard arrived at Brighton in 2019 as a player with pedigree in UEFA competition, having experienced the Europa League with former club Genk. Three-and-a-half seasons later, the winger is being tipped to step back up to European level.

After the departure of Brighton head coach Graham Potter to Chelsea, for example, there have been frequent suggestions that Trossard could tread the same path.

The 27-year-old will be out of contract at the end of the 2022-23 season, although Brighton have the option to extend his commitment by a further 12 months into 2024.

They may have to fend off interest in January, though, as Chelsea mull over their plans.

Now, it has emerged that the move to Stamford Bridge is not the only option on the table for Trossard to take the next step in the Premier League.

According to reporter Ben Jacobs, Manchester United and Liverpool have also been given the chance to sign Trossard. In one case, the response has been negative, but in the other, there are some reflections to be had.

Jacobs told Give Me Sport: “We’ll have to wait and see whether United decide to look a little bit closer to home and see whether there’s that shorter term and closer to home goalscorer that they might be able to attract.

“We know, for example, that Trossard at Brighton is being put in the shop window by his agent. He’s been offered to Manchester United, he’s been offered to Liverpool and he’s been offered to Chelsea. Liverpool are not interested.

“Manchester United haven’t really bitten, but given the [Cristiano] Ronaldo situation, we have to wait and see if they consider a player like him, somebody gettable, somebody that is in good form and somebody that can just tide them over and continue the momentum that they’re building under Erik ten Hag between now and the summer, at which point they can then come in for a big name.”

Trossard ready for next step – but might be better choosing Chelsea

Trossard would be a versatile option capable of adding to Man Utd’s depth. Although primarily a left winger – which is another region Ten Hag might want to reinforce, although his eyes may be more fixed on Cody Gakpo there – he can also feature in a more central attacking position.

His potential arrival at Old Trafford would not rule out the need for a new natural centre-forward. However, he could certainly help uplift the team’s fortunes in front of goal if he can replicate his Brighton form.

So far this season, the Belgian ace has scored seven goals and provided three assists from 14 Premier League appearances.

It is easy to see why he is appealing to bigger clubs. Perhaps Chelsea will remain his best option due to the Potter connection, though, despite his agent testing the water with both Man Utd and Liverpool as well.

What’s more, Chelsea have Champions League football on offer this season, whereas Man Utd do not. Still, the Red Devils are one of the biggest clubs in the world, so would always be worth considering if they react to his agent’s advances.
