Manchester United are gearing up to offer a new and improved contract to Anthony Martial, with the Glazers looking to protect their investment by tying him down to a longer-term deal, according to reports. The Frenchman, who spent the second half of last season on loan at Sevilla, was introduced as a second-half substitute in Monday’s win over Liverpool to register his first Red Devils appearance in over a year.
Martial is only under contract until the summer of 2024, meaning that he could become a free agent or even a cut-price target for a number of clubs over the coming months if he manages to pick up his form at United. Those in power at Old Trafford are not prepared to lose Martial just yet, though, and will provide him with the chance to extend his stay in Manchester in due course, according to the Daily Star.
It is said that United are preparing to offer Martial a two-year extension to his current deal, which he initially signed back in 2019. The 26-year-old missed the first two games of the new Premier League campaign with a hamstring injury but returned to contribute with an assist for Marcus Rashford in United’s impressive win over arch-rivals Liverpool earlier this week.
The Red Devils are now reportedly keen to secure Martial’s long-term future in case he is targeted by other clubs if he manages to put a string of influential performances together this season. However, it remains to be seen whether he will be prepared to negotiate or if he will look to run down his contract in order to pursue a fresh start elsewhere in the not-too-distant future.
JUST IN: Erik ten Hag replies to Cristiano Ronaldo transfer question with vow
Martial appears to have convinced Erik ten Hag of his worth during the Dutchman’s short spell in charge and the France international will now be aiming to become a regular starter for United by finding his very best form over the coming weeks and months. He impressed with a handful of goals in pre-season and will have encouraged those behind the scenes at United with his contribution against Liverpool earlier this week.
The former Monaco striker turned plenty of heads with his selfless link-up play and his desire to cover as much ground as possible in order to benefit the team as a whole. Martial was praised by Ten Hag after the final whistle at Old Trafford, with the United boss insisting that he has the required skill and knowledge of the game to become a real asset for the Red Devils this season.
“With him, he wasn’t available for 90 minutes after his injury, but he gave the ball a way out for the team,” explained Ten Hag when quizzed on Martial’s performance against Liverpool.
“He can be a target, he knows the right positions and he has the skills to play through. We saw that with the second goal. It was the right moment to bring him on the pitch.”
Martial will be hoping to be fit enough to play in United’s next game against Leicester City on Thursday after missing Saturday’s win over Southampton with a minor problem. Ten Hag’s side managed to pick up all three points in spite of Martial’s absence, with Bruno Fernandes volleying home a second-half winner to make it two wins in as many Premier League matches.
