Man Utd pit Ruben Neves against transfer alternative with Wolves scouting mission

Manchester United sent a senior scout to Molineux to watch Wolverhampton Wanderers midfielder Ruben Neves in person on Saturday.

Neves was drafted straight back into Wolves’ starting line-up to face Brighton after six weeks on the sidelines due to a knee injury sustained in the 3-2 defeat to Leeds United on March 18. The Portugal international wasn’t able to inspire Wolves to victory as Bruno Lage’s team lost for the third successive game.

There is growing belief behind-the-scenes at Wolves that Neves could be playing out his final season in old gold. Old Trafford is a possible destination, although Barcelona and Arsenal have also been heavily linked with Neves.

Wolves head coach Lage has suggested Neves is worth up to £100million, but owners Fosun aren’t likely to demand a British record fee for the 25-year-old. Fosun will, however, expect a significant increase on the £45m Liverpool paid for Diogo Jota in 2020 – a figure which remains the largest Wolves have raked in.

BirminghamLive understands a senior United scout was present at Molineux for the meeting with Brighton. Neves only played 45 minutes of Wolves’ 3-0 defeat to Brighton after being replaced by Pedro Neto at half-time.

Yves Bissouma, who scored Brighton’s third goal at Molineux, is also reportedly of interest to United heading into the summer window. Both Neves and Bissouma have been linked with filling the vacancy in United’s midfield, along with England international Declan Rice.

Bissouma’s contract expires at the end of next season and Brighton are likely to sell him this summer after rejecting a £25m proposal from Aston Villa in January. The Mali international will no doubt have impressed the watching scout and could provide United with a cheaper alternative to Neves and Rice.
