Man Utd: Robin van Persie told “I don’t care” in ruthless exit

Former Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal said “I don’t care” when Robin van Persie told him he wanted to see out his contract with the Red Devils.

The Dutch hitman won the Premier League in an explosive debut season which saw him contribute 26 goals and 15 assists in 38 league appearances. However, the former Arsenal centre forward saw his importance diminish during the troubled reins of David Moyes and Van Gaal.

While he managed to record Premier League goal tallies of 10 and 12 goals in the two following seasons, Van Persie was still ousted from the club in ruthless fashion. And the Dutchman offered an unpleasant insight into the way in which Van Gaal ousted him from the Red Devils.

“In my last season, I had this chat with Louis van Gaal, whom I had two very good seasons with the national team with,” Van Persie said to the High Performances Podcast in December 2020. “His first season and my last season at Manchester was not great.

“Then he told me ‘okay Robin, our ways will part. I’m the coach, you are the player, and you have to go – your time is up’. I was like ‘but I still have a contract’ and he said: ‘Yeah I don’t care’.”

Van Persie was soon carted off to Turkish giants Fenerbahce. He spent a further three seasons with the club, before finishing his career at the very club he started at Feyenoord. And while the former centre-forward admitted Van Gaal’s harsh news did not come as a complete surprise, he was shocked by the manner in which his former Netherlands boss went about the dismissal.

“Towards the end of it I saw something coming but not this ruthless and the way he said it as well,” Van Persie added. A lot of things go through your mind when you get a message like that.

“I thought ‘I still have a contract, my family us happy, it was my 11th year in England, and we love living in England, what’s next?’ My kids were still going to school, they have their friends and in a split second all these things come across your mind – how do you react to that?”

“I said ‘okay, we will see what happens, you have your opinion, but I’s happy in England and I still have a contract at Manchester United and my family is as well.”
