Manchester United ‘should move fast’ to ensure they are at the front of the queue to sign PSV Eindhoven star Cody Gakpo when the transfer window reopens, according to journalist Dean Jones.
Red Devils boss Erik ten Hag spent more than £200million ahead of the deadline earlier this month, but it appears he has already set his sights on further big-money additions to his squad.
What’s the latest news involving Gakpo?
According to Forbes, Manchester United remain interested in Gakpo after tracking him throughout the summer transfer window.
The report suggests the Red Devils agreed personal terms with the winger, who has already scored 10 goals and racked up a further nine assists in 13 appearances, but opted against testing PSV’s resolve by lodging a bid.
Leeds United and Southampton went into deadline day still in the hunt for Gakpo’s services and hopeful of striking an eleventh hour deal.
However, a switch failed to come to fruition after PSV opted against sanctioning the 23-year-old’s departure.
It is understood that the Dutch giants value Gakpo at £38million and turned down a £21.4million offer from Southampton during the closing stages of the window.
What has Dean Jones said about Gakpo?
Jones believes Gakpo deserves plenty of praise after refusing to allow the widespread speculation over his future to have an impact on his performances.
The transfer insider feels Manchester United need to up the ante in their pursuit of the prolific wide-man.
Jones told GIVEMESPORT: “To be able to shake off all that speculation and start the season like he has is unbelievable, to be honest.
“He’s got eight goals and six assists in seven Eredivisie games for PSV. Not only that, he played for the Netherlands and looked great. He came on as a sub and he was superb.
“United need to sign players who are confident and have that star quality. I think they should move fast here.”
Would Gakpo be interested in a move to Manchester United?
Gakpo has claimed that he was not interested in rushing into a move after initially believing Manchester United would be his destination, so it seems he may be waiting for the interest from Old Trafford to resurface.
That will be music to ten Hag’s ears as the PSV talisman impressed during the international break, grabbing a goal and an assist for the Netherlands.
However, it is understood that Leeds are also refusing to give up in their pursuit of Gakpo and, having made him their top target, will push to strike a deal in January.
