Man Utd to ‘double’ Raphael Varane’s wages with agreement edging closer

Manchester United are reportedly willing to double Raphael Varane’s wages in order to sign the Real Madrid defender this summer.

United have turned their attention to Varane after sealing a £73million deal for Borussia Dortmund winger Jadon Sancho.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side have tried to sign Varane twice – in 2011 and 2018 – and it seems like the summer of 2021 could be a case of third time lucky.

Varane has entered the final 12 months of his Real contract and has refused to sign a new deal because he is keen to explore his options.

El Confidencial reports that, while Real were initially keen to keep the 28-year-old this summer, president Florentino Perez is now happy to sell him.

Varane could be on his way to Old Trafford this summer

Perez’s only concern now is to ‘raise the price as much as possible’. While £51.1m (€60m) was his initial aim, he now thinks anything around £43m (€50m) would be deemed a success.

The report states United have been in negotiations with Varane and his representatives for ‘some time’ and are now ‘close to reaching an agreement regarding salary and years’.

United are reportedly willing to ‘double’ Varane’s current wage package at Real, which is something Los Blancos cannot compete with.

Real have already signed David Alaba on a free transfer from Bayern Munich this summer and will target Sevilla’s Jules Kounde or Villarreal’s Pau Torres as Varane’s replacement.

United want Varane as a long-term partner for Maguire

United are desperate to sign a world-class defender to partner Harry Maguire at centre-back next season.

Maguire’s ankle ligament injury undermined the closing stages of their campaign, with Eric Bailly, Victor Lindelof and Axel Tuanzebe struggling in his absence.

Varane arriving at Old Trafford would please former United defender Rio Ferdinand, who spoke of his admiration for the World Cup winner recently.

“He brings an absolute winning mentality. I think he’s played in 14 finals and won 14,” he said on his Vibe With Five YouTube channel.

“He knows how to win, he’s got great experience. He’s an unbelievable specimen.

“Alongside Maguire he needs somebody with pace, the way they play… he will bring authority to the backline.”
