Man Utd transfer news: ‘Incredible’ Kudus could be Erik ten Hag’s next signing from Ajax | Football | Sport

The electric, eye-catching form of Ajax revelation Mohammed Kudus will come as no surprise to his former boss Erik ten Hag, who knows exactly how good the Ghanaian can be when he’s operating at the peak of his powers. After another whirlwind summer in Amsterdam that has seen the Eredivisie giants lose a number of their integral senior players alongside their manager, Kudus has been one of several stars that have stepped up to the plate after seizing their opportunity to shine.

Kudus, a 2020 signing from Danish side Nordsjælland, has had to show resilience and patience in his first two years in Holland which has included a brief stint with Jong Ajax, where he rifled home five goals in five appearances.

Injuries including rib, ankle and knee problems have halted his development but having seemingly put a series of fitness issues behind him, Kudus is starting to show signs of fulfilling his potential.

During his time at Ajax, Ten Hag made it clear he felt the club had acquired a special player, one that would go on to achieve great things at the Johan Cruijff ArenA and if this season’s Champions League campaign is anything to go by – he was right.

“He did very well, you can see the incredible potential that that boy has,” Ten Hag said in August 2020 after a 2-1 win over Eintracht Frankfurt. “We are going to have a lot of fun with that. It can be used in several positions and that multifunctionality can help us a lot this year.”

Since then, Kudus has knuckled down and netted in consecutive Champions League matches against Rangers and Liverpool – also scoring three times in the Eredivisie.

The African prospect’s goals in Europe weren’t bad either. His barnstorming run against Rangers was finished brilliantly when he smashed in off the post with his weaker foot.

On Tuesday night at Anfield, Kudus delivered the goods again when he silenced the Kop with a dipping strike that flew in off the underside of the crossbar.

With the confidence pumping through his veins, Ajax chiefs may now be cautious that Kudus could be the next player in Ten Hag’s crosshairs after the summer acquisitions of Lisandro Martinez and Antony.

The Dutchman struggled to get the best from the 22-year-old due to his various injury struggles during his time in Amsterdam but he knows better than anyone that Kudus is a serious prospect.

His explosive shooting, cunning movement and interchangeability in attack suggest he has the credentials to become one of Europe’s best if he continues to work.

Delivering on the continental stage is only going to stand him in greater stead of earning his dream move – whether that be to the Premier League or one of the Spanish giants Barcelona or Real Madrid.

Either way, Ajax seem set to land yet another significant payday in the future – even though they will have no plans to cash in on Kudus.
