Man Utd transfer news: Phil Jones to ‘miss out’ on deadline day move despite Bordeaux link | Football | Sport

Manchester United are now likely to keep outcast Phil Jones despite a surprise move to Bordeaux being touted, according to reports. Jones was linked with the Ligue 1 club in a potential loan deal.

The defender recently made his first appearance in nearly two years during United’s 3-1 win over Burnley at the start of January.

Injuries and the arrivals of several big-name stars meant that Jones had not featured since January 2020.

He performed well against the Clarets, earning praise from Rangnick. “I think he did well, not having played for two years at this kind of level,” the interim head coach said.

“We didn’t see that (effects of the absence) in the game. He did his job and did exactly what I expected him to do.”

However, Jones was still tipped to leave Old Trafford in the winter transfer window.

The 29-year-old was pushed back down the pecking order due to the returns to fitness of Raphael Varane and club captain Harry Maguire.

A couple of Premier League clubs were mooted as possible destinations for the former England international but French outfit Bordeaux emerged as the most likely.

Several reports suggested that the former Blackburn Rovers star could move in a temporary deal.

But that now appears unlikely. According to the Manchester Evening News, Jones is at Carrington for training and will ‘miss out’ on exiting Old Trafford on deadline day.

Meanwhile, United are set to allow Donny van de Beek ignite his Premier League career at Everton.

The Dutch midfielder will join on a season-long loan after the Toffees moved ahead of Crystal Palace in the race for his signature.

Express Sport understands that Van de Beek had been in discussions with a couple of clubs, including Palace, but it seems that Everton’s appointment of Frank Lampard has swung the deal in their favour.

MEN also claim that Jesse Lingard is at Carrington and is running out of time to secure a transfer. The midfielder is out of contract at the end of the season and could leave at the start of July.
