Tottenham might just have handed Manchester United an unlikely boost in their attempts to convince Mauricio Pochettino to join the club. The Argentine manager is one of several names being considered by the Red Devils.
United have just received a timely boost in their search for a new manager after it emerged that Pochettino is ready to quit Paris Saint-Germain at the end of the season.
The former Tottenham boss is furious after missing out on Tanguy Ndombele, who was heavily linked with a move to the Parc des Princes.
Pochettino knows the player well after signing him in 2019 at Spurs but did not get to use him properly after being sacked just months into the season.
But with Antonio Conte ready to offload the player, it gave the 49-year-old the ideal chance to snap him up again only for PSG sporting director Leonardo to pull out of a deal that led the midfielder to join Lyon on loan instead.
According to Foot Mercato, that has pushed Poch to the edge in a job that he was already keen on canning for United after the dismissal of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
The chances of the ex-Southampton coach quitting PSG at the end of the season have grown exponentially – giving the Red Devils a huge boost.
The Murphy-born manager has one year left on his contract at PSG but Foot Mercato state that he has already informed those around him that this will be his last year.
Pochettino has long been admired by the top dogs at Old Trafford for his work at Tottenham but Daniel Levy prevented any chance of him becoming their new manager.
It would have cost the club a massive amount to be able to break him from his contract, a similar scenario at PSG.
But as a free agent, United would not have to gain permission from anyone except his agent while they are on the lookout for a new boss.
Ralf Rangnick joined as an interim manager until the end of the season after Solskjaer was sacked in November.
Several coaches have been linked with the post including Brendan Rodgers, Luis Enrique and Erik ten Hag but Pochettino has always been the favourite.
PSG are on course to win Ligue 1 this year after missing out on the title in shocking circumstances when Lille pipped them to the top.
The Qatari-backed side are 11 points clear while they face the French champions whereas United are one of several sides contending to finish in the top four.
They sit in a Champions League spot at the moment but the likes of Arsenal and Tottenham all have games in hand.
