Manchester United boost as Villarreal face ‘last-minute battle’ over injury issues

Manchester United are back in action when they host Villarreal at Old Trafford on Wednesday evening.

United return to Champions League action looking to arrest a run of form that has seen them win just once in the last four matches in all competitions.

Saturday’s 1-0 defeat to Aston Villa at Old Trafford means United have not tasted success at home since September 11, Cristiano Ronaldo’s homecoming.

The visit of Villarreal gives United the perfect chance to get back to winning ways in front of their home support.

Villarreal, though, are no pushovers as United are well aware having lost the Europa League final to them in Poland.

Unai Emery’s side held Real Madrid to a goalless draw at the Santiago Bernabeu on Saturday night and sit in 11th place after six games of the 2021-22 La Liga season.

However, the absences of Juan Foyth and Gerard Moreno could be keenly felt if the pair miss the trip to United.

Football Espana reports that Foyth faces a “last-minute battle” to be fit for the United game having come off injured with four minutes remaining in Madrid.

Meanwhile, Spanish media outlet El Periodico Mediterraneo claim that Moreno is a “doubt” for Wednesday with a hamstring injury.

Moreno has not played since a Champions League clash with Atalanta on September 14.

Emery was pleased with how his side approached Saturday’s game in the Spanish capital.

“We neutralized Real Madrid by playing with personality and demonstrating our idea of how to play,” he said.

“It is true that we lacked a little bit of cutting edge to be able to win the game, but we’re on the right path.

“We’re demanding of ourselves, we wanted to come away with the three points, but we can take a positive evaluation out of the team’s work tonight.”
