Manchester United fans are hoping the decision to make Donny van de Beek captain for the dying embers of last night’s friendly with Brentford is a sign of better things to come.
Following pre-season games against Derby County and QPR, it was a step up in class for United last night as they returned to Old Trafford for the first time.
Still missing England stars Harry Maguire, Luke Shaw, Marcus Rashford and marquee summer signing Jadon Sancho, it was, once again, a ‘fringe’ line-up that took to the pitch.
The experienced Nemanja Matic captained the side, which included Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Jesse Lingard, as goals from Anthony Elanga and Andreas Pereira earned United a 2-2 draw against the Premier League newcomers.
As you would expect, there were plenty of changes upon the restart.
One of them was returning Dutch midfielder van de Beek, who unfortunately missed Euro 2020 through injury, but he was offered a huge leap of faith when he was handed the armband for the final 15 minutes.
It was a move which drew plenty of focus on social media and beyond – especially given how the former Ajax man struggled to make an impact during his first season at Old Trafford.
Here are a selection of comments from United supporters about that decision from Ole Gunnar Solskjaer;
