Any more incomings at Manchester United are expected to hinge on outgoings at the club.
United have invested £115.9million on the signings of Raphael Varane and Jadon Sancho but have a bloated squad to trim before the transfer window closes on August 31.
Paul Pogba and Jesse Lingard have both entered the last year of their contracts and would fetch significant fees to offset the investments in Varane and Sancho.
Pogba, 28, has wanted out of United for the last three years and Lingard, also 28, has been marginalised since United signed Bruno Fernandes from Sporting Lisbon in January 2020.
Playmaker Andreas Pereira is free to leave, Eric Bailly’s future is uncertain despite signing a new contract in April and Phil Jones is surplus.
Diogo Dalot is generating interest from AC Milan but his situation depends on whether United make any headway on a prospective deal for Atletico Madrid full-back Kieran Trippier.
Dalot, 22, is expected to be involved in tonight’s pre-season friendly with Brentford at Old Trafford after starting for Portugal at the European Championship. The right-back spent last season on loan at Milan, who have already approached United about re-signing Dalot.
United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is believed to favour starting the season with Dean Henderson as his number one goalkeeper, which plunges David de Gea’s future in doubt. Any goalkeeping departure has already been offset by the arrival of Tom Heaton on a free transfer.
Axel Tuanzebe and Brandon Williams intend to secure season-long loans and younger academy players are scheduled to leave on loan.
United are exploring the possibility of signing a midfielder, a full-back or another centre half amid interest in Trippier, Eduardo Camavinga, Declan Rice, and Pau Torres, among others. The club currently has eight midfielders in their first-team squad.
Bury-born Trippier, 30, has made arrangements to relocate to Manchester permanently with his family and the boyhood United fan is hopeful of joining the club.
Representatives of Camavinga, 18, have held informal discussions with United but the Rennes midfielder’s preference is to move to Spain. Torres, 24, was shortlisted by United behind Varane in their targets for centre half and Rice, 22, asked England teammates Harry Maguire and Luke Shaw about United on international duty in March.
