OPINION: Manchester United’s situation with outgoings is becoming clearer in the transfer window

The last window where money flew around before Manchester United shut out the draft was in January 2017. United negotiated the sales of Morgan Schneiderlin to Everton and Memphis Depay to Lyon, banking the best part of £45million for two players without a single Premier League start to their name all season.

Sean Goss, a mere footnote, was also jettisoned for £500,000. Considering United had invested £25m in Schneiderlin and £26.3m in Depay only 18 months earlier, they had recouped an impressive outlay for two failures.

Schneiderlin was later cited as an example where, under the current ‘cultural reset’ regime, the recruitment department would veto the manager’s recommended target. United felt burnt by signing Depay in a deal rising to £35m at a time French wingers Kylian Mbappe, Kingsley Coman, Thomas Lemar and Ousmane Dembele were emerging. United mined Anthony Martial, hardly a roaring success, from the gold rush.

The United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward has previously been dismissive of the January window, described by club sources as a ‘seller’s market’ driven by the desperation of the buyer rather than the seller. Alexis Sanchez was desperate.
