Mauricio Pochettino slammed PSG’s ‘unacceptable’ performance after they were hammered by Monaco.

Wissam Ben Yedder scored twice either side of Kevin Volland’s strike to earn the home side a much-needed win and pile more misery on under-fire Pochettino after their Champions League exit at the hands of Real Madrid. Manchester United target Pochettino’s future at the Ligue 1 leaders is in serious doubt and he pulled no punches after his side’s dismal display.

He said: “It’s unacceptable. At this level, you can’t start a game the way we did. It’s clear the Champions League has done a lot of damage. The team should clearly let go of that.

“The international break should allow for a change in mentality and put us back to where we should be. We have to come back with the responsibility that goes along with putting on this shirt.”

Lionel Messi was missing through illness but Neymar and Kylian Mbappe also endured off days as Monaco were worthy winners. Ben Yedder opened the scoring on 25 minutes with a cheeky flick before Volland added another after the break. Ben Yedder wrapped up victory from the penalty spot late on to heap more pressure on Pochettino.

PSG captain Marquinhos fronted up after the drubbing and fired a title warning to his teammates after Rennes closed the gap to 13 points.

“It’s catastrophique. It’s hard to stomach. This was our worst match of the year.,” said the Brazilian. “We came here to enjoy and win the match. We’re in a difficult patch. We don’t want to throw everything up in the air.

“We’ll have to work together to work our way out of this period. We’re not letting up. There were a lot of expectations [against Madrid]. It’s a defeat that really hurts. Now, we have objectives to go and chase.

“We have to do our best, with the right mentality. If we keep performing like this, the title will certainly be in danger. The warning is there. We have to come back, after international duty, with a good state of mind.”
