Michael Owen fears Harry Maguire’s lack of pace is a real problem for Manchester United after the club captain was tormented by Southampton striker Armando Broja during Saturday’s 1-1 draw at Old Trafford.

The 20-year-old forward is currently on loan at the south coast club from Chelsea and has made a huge impact at St Mary’s to the extent that the Saints are considering launching a bid in the summer to make his move permanent.

Broja scored in Wednesday’s surprise 3-2 win at Spurs and was to the fore again this afternoon, troubling United with his pace and physicality.

Although it was his striker partner, Che Adams, who scored Southampton’s deserved equaliser, Broja enjoyed another reputation enhancing 90 minutes giving Maguire, in particular, no end of problems.

The England international was all at sea in the second half and was fortunate not to concede a penalty in the second half when he bundled Broja over a before clumsily treading on his leg.

‘I did fear for him and that was quite embarrassing,’ former United striker Owen said of the incident, speaking to Premier League Productions.

‘He’s got no pace at the best of times but he was outwitted there (by Broja). Then you’re thinking don’t try to redeem your mistake, he just got away with it and I don’t think it was a penalty.

‘But you are fearful when he’s running towards him man you think are you going to try to do something stupid but he just gets away with it.

‘His lack of pace is a real problem. We’ve said it before, we’ll say it again. The goal, he could have been squeezing up but he’s petrified of that space in behind.’
