Neville’s celebration after Owen’s winner for Man Utd vs Man City

Manchester United travel to the Etihad Stadium to take on bitter rivals Manchester City on Sunday afternoon.

The Manchester derby has produced many crackers in the past.

One of the best games the two teams have ever played came in 2009.

The game was locked at 3-3 going into the sixth minute of stoppage-time. It looked a certainty that the two sides would share the spoils.

But United won it in the dying moments through Michael Owen.

Ryan Giggs produced a defence splitting pass and Owen showed coolness personified to prod the ball into the corner of the net.

Gary Neville went absolutely wild on the touchline.

The veteran defender, who was 34 years old at the time, was an unused substitute during the match.

And he went crazy when Owen netted the dramatic winner.

Neville ran onto the pitch before turning around, running down the touchline and celebrating in front of the travelling Manchester City fans.

In an attempt to save himself from trouble, Neville the English right-back then pretended he was warming up.

The video resurfaced on social media a couple of years back and caught Neville’s attention.

“We’d made 3 subs as well!” He wrote, alongside a laughing emoji, per the Mirror.

Mark Hughes, who was Manchester City manager at the time, made reference to Neville’s celebration and branded him a ‘lunatic’.

“I saw Gary Neville running off like a lunatic,” he said.

“What I saw reminded me of Sir Alex and Brian Kidd. It shows what it meant to them. It shows we can compete.”

Neville’s actions that day shows just how much it means to emerge victorious in the Manchester derby.

Let’s hope the game between the two sides on Sunday afternoon is a classic.
