Rangers could yet sign Man Utd loanee Amad Diallo for a second time judging by the coy response of Giovanni van Bronckhorst.
Amad Diallo joined Rangers on a loan deal in the January transfer window in a bid for the Gers to make gains on their title rivals Celtic. The move did not pan out as expected initially, although the 19-year-old has came into his own in recent weeks.
Amad signed for Manchester United in 2021 for an initial fee of £19million, with the final cost potentially rising to £37million.
On the surface, the figures seemed high for a relatively unproven player. The Ivory Coast international’s performances of late have, however, showcased the ability he possesses.
Amad is only 19 and isn’t quite Premier League ready yet. He has, however, appeared in Serie A on multiple occasions when he played for Atalanta.
The winger has also appeared for the Ivory Coast senior national team a handful of times.
Another loan move could be beneficial for both Rangers and Man Utd. Whilst on loan he would be able to develop and gain valuable first-team minutes which United won’t be able to offer in their first-team next year.
The likelihood of Amad Diallo returning
Rangers manager Giovanni Van Bronckhorst recently hailed his loanee after another bright cameo against Ross County. Amad found the scoresheet late on to seal a comfortable 4-1 victory.
“I’m happy with Amad,” he said to the Glasgow Times. “He’s been getting more minutes in the last few weeks.
“He has been training well, he had a moment where he found it a bit difficult with the new team he was in, the adaptation to a new city, but I’m really happy with him.
“He’s a very, very good winger as we’ve seen the last few weeks but we also have a lot of players in that position available who have also done well. I’m happy with his performance.”
When the subject of whether Amad could return to Ibrox arose, Van Bronckhorst left the door ajar to a second deal.
“His loan is to the end of the season, then he goes back to Manchester,” added the Dutchman. “If he’s here next season, I don’t know.”
Has Amad developed?
The progress the 19-year-old has made in his short time at Rangers is not to be ignored.
WhoScored say that the winger has amassed an average rating of 6.53 over his 13 appearances. However, during this time he has scored three goals with two coming in the last couple of weeks.
As his form is slowly starting to pick up he is now challenging both Ryan Kent and Ianis Hagi for a starting position.
Statistically, Amad hasn’t lived up to the eye-watering fee United once paid, but he has shown glimpses of quality whilst playing north of the border.
Another loan deal would make sense if Rangers can secure a move at a price that suits them. United have developed a recent habit of charging loan fees – something Rangers must consider carefully.
