Real Madrid have put Premier League clubs on red alert after dropping out of the race for Erling Haaland.
Manchester United, Man City, Chelsea and Liverpool have been made aware of the latest twist in the transfer scrap by Haaland’s super-agent Mino Raiola.
Real have decided they can no longer afford the £300million required to land Haaland following their capture of France hitman Kylian Mbappe.
The Paris Saint-Germain forward will head to the Bernabeu in the summer on wages and add-ons totalling an astonishing £1m per week.
As we revealed last week, prolific Borussia Dortmund frontman Haaland’s first pick is the Nou Camp, assuming the hard-up Catalans can raise the money in time.
But Barcelona’s deadline-day signing of Arsenal striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang on a three-and-a-half year contract indicates that, even with their billion pound loan from Goldman Sachs, a deal for Haaland will not be simple to achieve.
By withdrawing from the Haaland race now, Real hope it will push the player closer to these shores – and away from bitter-rivals Barcelona.
Who do you think Erling Haaland will sign for? Let us know in the comments section.
All of which leaves the English elite in an increasingly strong position as they get ready to trigger Haaland’s £67m buy-out clause in June.
And that means they can now start pulling together the financial package to persuade the Borussia Dortmund hitman, 21, to sign for them.
